Ford has officially named its upcoming affordable midsize electric pickup the Fathom, with a starting price of $28,350 (excluding a $1,595 delivery fee). Set to go on sale in early 2027, the Fathom is the first vehicle built on Ford's new Universal EV Platform and directly targets the high-volume, mainstream EV market segment.
The name 'Fathom' was chosen to represent the company's effort to 'penetrate and come to understand' what was once considered beyond reach—bringing a capable, tech-forward EV pickup to a mass audience. The vehicle boasts more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, a large high-resolution touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BlueCruise hands-free driving, bidirectional charging, and a digital key. It will also be the first vehicle to integrate Apple Maps for real-time EV routing and battery preconditioning.
Achieving this $28,350 price point requires aggressive cost engineering, particularly in the battery pack. Ford plans to use prismatic LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries sourced from its BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan to significantly cut costs and maximize interior space. Manufacturing simplifications, such as megacasting, further contribute to cost reduction.
